Micro-LED

Micro-LED is a display technology built from an enormous number of microscopic LED elements, each one acting as a self emissive sub pixel. Unlike LCD, there is no backlight and no liquid crystal layer in between, and unlike OLED, the light emitting material is inorganic, which in principle avoids the gradual brightness loss that can affect OLED pixels over very long use.

In practice, Micro-LED promises the deep blacks of a self emissive panel combined with very high peak brightness, without the burn-in considerations associated with OLED. The manufacturing challenge is placing billions of tiny LEDs with extreme precision, which has kept Micro-LED televisions large, complex to produce and priced well above mainstream OLED and LCD models for now.

For most buyers today, Micro-LED remains a technology to watch rather than a mainstream option on the shelf, and it currently sits alongside rather than replaces OLED and LCD based sets. The TV types overview puts it in context alongside the technologies that are widely available now.
