DVB-C

DVB-C is the digital cable television standard, used by cable network operators to deliver channels through the same coaxial cable that once carried analogue signals. It is common in apartment buildings and regions with an established cable television infrastructure, where a wall socket already provides the signal rather than an antenna or a satellite dish.

A television intended for use with a cable connection needs a built in tuner that supports DVB-C, and in some networks and countries an additional module or subscription card is required to unlock encrypted pay channels, while a basic range of channels is often available unencrypted. Channel lineups, encryption and the exact services offered over cable vary by provider and country.

Anyone with an existing cable connection should confirm that a new television lists DVB-C support, and check with the local cable provider whether any extra hardware is needed for the full channel range. See our guide to antenna and reception and the entry on CI+ slot for how encrypted channels are typically unlocked.
