Streaming stick

A streaming stick is a compact device, usually about the size of a USB drive, that plugs directly into an HDMI port and adds streaming apps and an app store to a television. It draws power either from the TV's USB port or a small separate adapter, and connects to the internet over Wi Fi.

Streaming sticks are popular both for older televisions that have no smart features at all, and for newer smart TVs whose built in app platform has become slow or stopped receiving app updates. Because a stick is easy to replace on its own schedule, separately from the television, it can keep a set current for streaming long after the built in system falls behind.

When choosing a streaming stick, checking that it supports the television's maximum resolution and HDR format, and that the remote includes the inputs needed for voice search or quick access to specific apps, makes a practical difference day to day. See our streaming devices guide and the entry on media player for larger box shaped alternatives.
