The TV operating system, sometimes called the smart TV platform or app platform, is the software running behind a smart TV's home screen. It manages navigation between inputs, apps and settings, provides an app store for installing streaming services, and often powers a recommendation row of shows and films on the main screen.
Manufacturers use different operating systems, and the choice affects which apps are available, how the interface looks and feels, how often updates arrive, and sometimes how much on screen advertising appears on the home screen. Two televisions with identical picture hardware can feel very different day to day purely because of the operating system running on top, in areas such as menu speed, voice search and remote control design.
Since the operating system tends to matter more for daily use than many hardware specifications, it is worth checking reviews and demonstrations of the specific platform on a model before buying, particularly regarding app availability in your own country. See our smart TV platforms guide for a comparison of the main systems and the entry on HbbTV for broadcaster interactive features.
