VESA pattern

The VESA pattern, also called VESA mounting, is a standardised layout of threaded holes on the back of a television, described as a width by height measurement in millimetres, such as 400 by 200 or 200 by 200. It exists so that mounts and stands from different manufacturers can fit televisions from different brands, as long as the pattern and screw size match.

Larger televisions generally use a wider VESA pattern than smaller ones, since the holes need to spread the television's weight over a larger area. When buying a wall mount, checking that its supported VESA range includes the exact pattern printed in the television's manual or specification sheet avoids a mismatch, since many mounts only cover a limited range of patterns and weights.

Some very large or unusually shaped televisions use a non standard pattern or an adapter plate, so it is worth confirming VESA compatibility directly against the television's own documentation rather than assuming from screen size alone. See our guide to wall mounting a TV for more.
