QD-OLED

QD-OLED is an OLED panel design that pairs a blue self emissive OLED layer with a quantum dot layer, rather than the white sub pixel and colour filter approach used in WRGB OLED panels. The quantum dots convert the blue light into red and green, producing the final colours more directly.

The result is a self emissive display that, like other OLED panels, can switch pixels off completely for deep blacks, while the quantum dot layer aims to widen the colour range and improve brightness in saturated colours compared with earlier OLED generations. QD-OLED panels have so far been produced by one panel maker and are used across several television brands.

For a buyer, QD-OLED and WRGB OLED sets share the core strengths of self emissive technology, such as wide viewing angles and strong contrast in dark rooms, with differences mainly showing up in peak brightness and colour saturation under bright, colourful content. Our OLED versus QLED guide puts these differences into everyday buying terms.
